MES for Process Industries: Steel, Paints, Foundry, Refractories
Discrete manufacturing and process manufacturing are different worlds. A car has a serial number. A tonne of liquid steel does not. A batch of paint can be reprocessed; a finished welded subassembly cannot. Generic MES platforms built for discrete operations always struggle with the realities of process plants.

- Batch genealogy — every batch links to its raw material lots, intermediate batches, recipe version and process parameters.
- Recipe management — versioned, approved, deployable to specific equipment with deviation tracking.
- Continuous flow + batch hybrid — paints, food, chemicals all blend continuous and batch behaviour.
- Tank and silo management — levels, allocations, blending logic.
- Regulatory traceability — FSSAI, BIS, ISO, GMP compliance baked in, not bolted on.
Where Discrete-First MES Breaks
- Forces you to model batches as serial numbers — mathematically wrong, operationally painful.
- Cannot represent partial consumption, blending or reprocessing.
- Recipe versioning is bolted on as a document attachment, not a first-class object.
- Time-series sensor data is treated as an afterthought even though it is core to process.
Sector Specifics
Steel & Foundry
Heat numbers are the unit of genealogy. Every billet, slab, casting must trace back to its heat, its chemistry analysis, its furnace and its operator. Real-time chemistry tracking from LIBS / OES sensors is a first-class data source.
Paints & Coatings
Batch sizes range from a few hundred kg to several tonnes. Tinting, dispersion and reactor management dominate. Tank allocation logic and material balance reconciliation matter more than discrete cycle counting.
Refractories
Long batch cycles, high-energy kilns, demanding chemistry. Energy consumption per kg is the single most important KPI — process-industry MES must integrate energy meters directly.
Practitioner note
If your MES vendor has built three discrete plants and one paint plant, ask hard questions before signing. Process MES is its own engineering discipline.

Is Aveva / Wonderware a good fit for process industries?
It is workable but expensive and rigid in batch genealogy. For Indian process plants we more often deploy a purpose-built MES with proper batch and recipe management baked in.
